Horace C. Stoneham Baseball Room of the San Francisco Giants-SF Giants Training Camp Tempe, Arizona in the 60's

In the early years of my career as a carver in Tacoma, I was in business with a Millionaire Lumber Baron and Oil man, Mr. Ben Cheney. We formed a corporation known as Cheney- Art. Mr. Cheney provided the connections to The San Francisco Giants, as well as other teams for which I carved a multitude of players. The San Francisco Giants had a Farm team in Tacoma , the Tacoma Giants who played in Cheney Stadium.

He owned a big part of Giants stock and I was privileged to attend games and get to know players as well as managers, and many old time greats, Carl Hubble for example, walked in one day and watched me carve. I was in Cheney's Office on a different occasion and was introduced to singer and movie actor Pat Boone who was there discussing a oil stock deal. He obtained one of my carvings of some bear cubs as a gift from Cheney-Art.

In addition to the oversize door featured in this old photo, I also carved a hallway of Old Time Giants Hall of Famers portraits, such as Christy Matheson. They adorned the Tempe Building.

A large Mural of Candlestick park with thousands of people in the stands and a parking area full of vehicles was carved for the bar. It was entitled, "Where the Giants come to play! " , the apostophe  (!) was a baseball bat over a baseball.

This was in the bar, but the meeting Room had this huge carved door. (as depicted here) The Horace C. Stoneham ( General Manager ) Room.  It was the door in to a meeting room in the Training grounds facility.

Many Ball Player Statues of players also adorned the Training Facility rooms, Players such as Catcher Tom Haller, who posed with a carved catcher for a Giants photograph (see photo), looking as if the statue was another catcher off to Haller's extreme left.

While attending the Tacoma Games, third baseman Jay Ward lived in the apartments about two blocks from my studio and would come up there and whittle with me. That ceased one afternoon when he slashed the palm of his left hand with a game scheduled that evening. The rule came down that I was welcome to study all the ball players movements in the future, but I was not to teach ANY OF THEM HOW TO CARVE~!

The door was four inches thick Basswood and oversize wide.
