Emmett Kelly-I had a humorous encounter with one of the Greatest Clowns named Emmett Kelly while I was a Washington State Patrolman assigned temporarily to the Puyallup Western Washington State Fair, which is the biggest in the state.

Officer Ken Teeple, a Southpaw, and Myself were doing four foot square chalk talks drawings , complete with microphones and commenting on law breaking drivers. We occupied a raised Stage in front of the State Patrol and Fire Department building. We did two shows an hour, working simultaneously on four foot sheets of paper with Colored Chalk. As example, we could do a cartoon four foot high of a drunk hitting a power pole, in color, with lively Chit-Chat exchange, in four minutes. We did a number of traffic related subjects and by the end of the day when the Grandstand show started, were were more than willing to quit and attend the show.

We had been seated together about 15 minutes, watching the acts, when we started hearing giggles, than laughter and finally down right belly laughs. Since

the acts on stages performing were not humorous we both glanced around at these people, wondering what was causing their gales of laughter. They seemed to all be looking at us. Sensing something behind me, I turned in my seat and encountered Emmett Kelly, with his broom, pretending he was sweeping debris from the floor of the stadium onto the backs of two uniformed and unaware Police Officers. He really got everybody going, including Ken and I as we both broke up in laughter ourselves when we realized we were the butt of a great joke.

Afterwards, we both Thanked him for his act, but he confided he had watched us perform that day and when he saw us in the Grandstand, he couldn't resist temptation. He thanked us for making his act so good that night.~~ Inyo
