PLATOON LEADER-Robert Haebel Major General, USMC,    retired.

Many of the Marine Officers I have known were what we called MUSTANGS, former Enlisted Marines who had been promoted through merit up through the ranks and assigned to Officer's Candidate School "Shake and Bake" in time of war if you will.

The former Mud Marines or Enlisted made good to excellent officers and leaders. They knew and respected their men's welfare and abilities and vice versa. This Gentleman was know as "Uncle BOB" behind his back because he was so solicitous of his troops.

He was a Sergeant when I was a Private before the Korean War. After his merit was shown on his first Korean Tour, he was sent to Officer's Candidate School and graduated as a Butter Bar, a second Lieutenant of Marines.

He retired a few years back as a Major General , having gone all the way to the top of his profession and now lives just outside Camp Pendleton, California at Vista. He owns several pieces of my Marine Statues as well as placing some in Headquarters of Camp Pendleton.

On Presenting this to him, I joked that he "Was a bit too busy as a Platoon leader in Korea to appreciate it then, " so he could have it now. His First Command. Ya Did Good Uncle Bob!

I have carved many different objects for the Corps including a plaque honoring the Marine Guards taken Prisoner in Iran. They had a most strenuous duty, not allowed to resist for fear someone of importance might be injured or killed. My training years before for embassy duty was much simpler; we would have fought to the death protecting ALL American property. Times Change.
