Warrior Offering Prayer-

This photo is of a carving depicting  a Warrior offering a prayer for Buffalo. Perhaps I should say "The return of SOME buffalo” to feed his family. Judging by the 30-30 Winchester he is holding, he lives at a date when the Whites, in an attempt to destroy his life style, have killed all the Buffalo. The theory was to destroy their life style so they would HAVE to BECOME WHITES or starve to death. The Army Surgeon General proclaimed following Colonel MacKenzie's subjection of tribes of the Southern plains, such as: ---Kiowa, Comanche, Southern Cheyenne, Arapahoe, etc... that the White man's superior fighting ability was NOT responsible for subduing and defeating the Indians, it was Starvation , Whiskey and White man's diseases that killed them off as a major power.

This Carving of the "Prayer for Buffalo” is a take off on a rather famous painting on the subject. I have done a number of topics about Native Americans that were prompted by well know painting and prints years back, although I use my own designs when

doing so, but using the thought behind such as "The End of the Trail" painting that was so popular.

This carving was done a least 30 years ago on Two inch thick Basswood. Believe it to have been about 10 inches wide and about 26 inches tall. Stained surface.
