| "Death of a Man, a Nation and a Culture"-Around the neck of the frail old man hangs a Lewis and Clark presented "PEACE" medal; in effect, a promise medal that if the Indians gave up their way of life, the whites promised Buffalo, Water, Fish, Grass, Timber. etc. but in reality, the bony hand of death reaches for him. To attempt to make a White Man of an Indian is to Kill him and his Culture. At lower left hand edge is carved in sign language which reads; "White Man Steals the Land!" This is Basswood, 15 inches wide by 48inches tall This carving of a "Death of a Man, a Nation and a Culture" was carved after reading about Cheyenne and Sioux descendants gathering and standing outside the Custer Battlefield while White visitors were inside... I carved this in the Hope that it could be obtained, pressed in sand and cast in bronze at foundry. My object was to see the Bronze casting mounted on a huge stone at fence line of the Battlefield so the Native Americans could have an assembly point to gather and honor their Ancestors of that battle. I never had the money to do the bronze myself, but if you are one who would like to see this through email me at art@artmckellips.com |
