Chief Red Cloud-

The Famous Oglala Sioux Chief Red Cloud was born in 1822. He first gained recognition by the US Army when he defeated and killed Captain Fetterman and his command out of Fort Phil Kearney on the Bozeman Montana Trail. Red Cloud resented the intrusion of the white soldiers in that area, his warriors constantly harassed the Army, forcing them to admit defeat and abandon Fort Kearney.

Red Cloud then became the only Indian to have won a war with the Army and peace (after a fashion) until Custer's 7th Calvary seriously misjudged the

Sioux and Cheyenne Warrior and was wiped out in 1876 at the Little Big Horn.

Chief Red Cloud was detained and disarmed along with his whole tribe prior to Custer's defeat by General Mac Kenzie and his troops. Mac Kenzie had little respect for Custer and the way he did things, but he kept Red Cloud out of the Battle.

Because the Sioux Kids of today on the Rez have so little, I try to contribute each year to the Red Cloud Indian School (see Links page). They have so little and offer so much pride and promise if given a helping hand.
