Osage Warrior on Horse

I traveled up to Omak High School doing a series of Carving Seminars there and at Grand Coulee Dam High for mainly Indian Kids of the Colville Reservation. My object was to interest them in learning to carve and utilizing the abilities that I had taught them .

This desire came following a number of incidents during the time I toured the National Western Art Show Circuit and twice encountered the same Yakima Indian boy at the Ellensburg Show. He was so fascinated by wood carving he watched me by the hour. I was hoping perhaps to stir up that type emotion up at Colville Rez where I knew a great Indian Artist, Smoker Marchand, who is the Director of Planning.

He set up the Seminars for me at the High Scho0ol woodshops. The Wood Shop teachers apologized that the only wood they had available was Pine pieces, most with knots. I quickly dispersed any regrets on their part, explaining that if an Artist or a Carver can't change something on the wood, to

accept it as part of the design.

I utilized this piece with the knothole, by making it a Sun in the sky, or Moon if you will, with An Eagle spirit near it and stars in the sky with an Osage ( my background, see His Ancestry ) Warrior on Horseback, Arm up thrust to the Creator. If you can't change it, use it.

Pine wood 2" by 9" wide by 24 " tall

This  carving has been donated to The Native American Youth and Family Center, Portland, Oregon (NAYA). The Center may be able to obtain the equipment (benches, band saw and hand carving tools) so I can teach the Youth to carve. They would need sponsors for this program.

If you like my work and would be interested in helping make this happen email Nicole Maher (nicholem@nayapdx.org), mention you are writing about the Project for Art McKellips to Teach the Youth Carving.
